The Veil Was Jesus’ Flesh

“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest in the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated through the veil, that is, His flesh . . . .” Heb. 10:19-20.

In the temple there was veil between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies. This veil was a divider. Ex. 26:33. It is sin that divides, or separates us from God. Isa. 59:2.

When the Scriptures say that the veil was Jesus’ flesh, this means categorically that Jesus had our sin in His flesh. This agrees perfectly with what is written in Romans 8:3, that God condemned sin in Christ’s flesh. Obviously He couldn’t have condemned it there if it hadn’t been there.

That Jesus was perfected means that all sin in the flesh was condemned so that no more sin was left. When Jesus cried, “It is finished!” the visible veil in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, to show that there was no longer any divider, that the way into the Holy of Holies was opened and consecrated for us; in fact, even the rocks were split and the graves were opened! Matt. 27:51. What a work!

The way is made through Jesus’ flesh by condemning sin in the flesh, by denying and putting to death the human self-will.

As long as Jesus was here in the days of His flesh, right up until He was perfected and the work was finished, His flesh was the divider that barred the way into the Holy of Holies, because He, for our sakes, bore our sin in His flesh.

What an amazing way God in His wisdom, according to His good pleasure, had devised for our salvation! We can well cry out: “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” We certainly have every reason to fall on our face and worship God, saying: “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God for ever and ever. Amen.” Rev. 7:10, 12.
