Conclusion
Neither in time nor eternity will we ever be finished talking about and praising this work of salvation that is so full of wisdom and rich in content and grace. All the wisdom of God is summed up in this work.
No wonder superficial people who are in bondage to one thing or another are neither able nor willing to understand it. What would they do with such an understanding anyway?
But the one who fears and loves God with all his heart will understand it. And he has use for this understanding too. For such a person this knowledge will fall in good ground and bear fruit.
After getting light over Christ manifested in the flesh, we can understand and find meaning in such a verse as Luke 6:12: “In these days He went out to the mountain to pray; and all night He continued in prayer to God.” This was not in Gethsemane. Here He fought even longer than He did in Gethsemane. Why such toil and battle—He who was God’s Son?! Because He had renounced being like God and had instead become like us, His brethren, in all points!
For our sakes He bore our sin in His flesh so that all sin might be condemned there.
Just think that He was willing to do it and that He did do it! That He was faithful unto death, even the death of the cross! That He would stoop so low! That He would suffer in such a way for about 30 years!
What significance there must have been FOR HIM in these words:
IT IS FINISHED!
