Letter to Aksel Smith, 1908/09/02

Lervik, September 2, 1908
Dear brother Aksel,

Today I received your good letter written on August 25. I see that you are back home from Sommerhjemmet. I haven’t gotten the two books you sent yet. Perhaps they were sent to Namsos and, if so, will probably arrive later. According to the squadron commander’s orders, which came today, we are going to set sail for Marviken this Saturday. We should arrive there by Monday. Several vessels have to refuel there. We refueled in Bergen. Then the squadron will sail as soon as possible and head eastward. I’m not sure I can go ashore when we get to Marviken; we’ll see, because people have trouble returning on time and usually have to be rounded up by the police.

I received a letter from Gunnerius Tollefsen today, whom you also mention in your letter. He is asking me to come and visit him so he can make my stay in Bergen more enjoyable. Unfortunately, I received this kind invitation too late, since we are already 150 kilometers south of Bergen. I’m planning to send him my heartfelt thanks for the invitation.

Br. Sigurd Kristoffersen has now traveled to Copenhagen after being invited by Br. Plum. He will work a bit in the office, distribute Kirkeklokkerne, and help out in the meetings. He is asking for 100 kroner per month to live on, but Plum has not agreed to that. Pauline told me this evening that he will arrive in Copenhagen on September 2 and will take the tram to Golgatakirken, where there will be a feast and where several more brothers with the gifts of the Spirit will also be present. He is going to write to me as soon as possible and tell me how things are going.

Personally, I benefit most from being alone with God, because you can’t always hear His voice in the streets or in the marketplace. Just as life itself is hidden with Christ in God, His instruction and work of building us up also takes place in secret. Therefore it is written: “Who is blind but My servant, or deaf as My messenger whom I send?” We use our outer senses less and less and our inner senses more and more.

These fundamental principles must be strictly adhered to in daily life, and we must be especially vigilant to make sure they are practiced when we are together at meetings and conferences. If we are careless in this area, we lose our connection with God who gives us answers to every obscure question. When you are together with brothers, it is a human tendency to want to let yourself go and get involved in all kinds of things. That doesn’t accomplish anything. If we maintain our connection with God and don’t care at all about what’s going on around us, we will have wonderful things revealed to us by a “Wonderful God,” because that is His name. Maintaining a connection with God as His child is one thing, but maintaining a connection to your “ministry” is another matter. We must make a clear distinction between the two.

Maybe we’ll get together in Kristiansand. God sustains me here on board, so everything is going extremely well. I prayed that the Lord would allow me to find the right time and place in my service. He has answered my prayer, and everything is going perfectly. We have a mighty God. He wants to help us in the details; that’s how He is glorified most. And what is life other than details.

Hearty greetings from your brother,

Johan

Greet those who are at home.
