Thank you for your good letter and for the telegram. At the same time your letter came today, I also received quite a long letter from Br. Anthony. You should plan your trip so that you arrive here on Saturday, because we will likely have a lot to talk about. Indignation over the denial of my request for leave was a powerful assault on my state of composure, but thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph and enables us to disarm and “deaden” those things that would disturb our peace of mind. I have heard that Br. Anthony is really struggling, but he will simply have to suffer through it. You should write to him and really take him to task now and then. I wrote to him today that there are already enough spiritual shipwrecks (i.e., people who have not battled their way through to full victory) and that as the editor of such a widely read and influential publication, he needed to be a man with full victory.
It was a delight to hear that Agnes Thelle, Dagmar Gregersen, as well as Kleppe are going to meet together to discuss the topic of sanctification. As you know, there was a conference on sanctification at Nissen’s place in Copenhagen at the end of last month, to which Br. Plum and Br. Rasmussen were invited. I have written to Br. Rasmussen and have asked him to tell me a bit about how this went: which subjects were discussed and which conclusions were reached. What is needed now in our country, and in all of Scandinavia, is a common sense approach toward sanctification. We have had enough conferences and conventions. If we are going to have any more of those, it would have to be a conference on sanctification where they discuss the importance of spreading an understanding of what comes after receiving the power of the resurrection—namely, fellowship with Christ in His sufferings. What is also needed is a publication about sanctification. I believe that this publication would be well received all across Scandinavia. Det Gode Budskap and Byposten are hardly likely to be viable in the long run, because they are striving for their own gain and are not being led in a sound spiritual direction.
If Br. Erik Andersen and Br. Barratt don’t enter into deeper sanctification, they will end up taking a passive or perhaps even an opposing role, which will quickly bring them up to the surface. An article I wrote to Missionæren will probably be published this Friday. This article is more radical than any of the other articles I have dared to write before. I allowed these things to pass my scrutiny, because I have a feeling that the editor is more in agreement with me now. You know yourself that you must write in such a way that your article can get published, even if this means holding back the most pointed and categorical statements.
The men who have brought this doctrine into this country about skipping over into Romans 8 are gravely lacking in integrity. This is the very thing I have been wanting to bring into the light, since they do not defend their doctrinal tenets; they just allow it to be torn down without any contradiction. But allowing it to fall without contradiction is the same as letting go of the rudder. The spiritual leadership is slipping out of their hands because they are not able to keep the ship on the right course. Have you actually thought about this? This is and will be the end result of this spiritual campaign, for it is always the victorious who rule, both in the temporal and the spiritual. But they don’t really understand the time of their visitation. The time came for King Nebuchadnezzar when the kingdom was torn from his hand. We are living in a time of powerful spiritual evolution. For this reason, there is an urgent need for us to watch and pray. Not everyone benefits from hearing about these things. But it is good for us to discuss them, since God has given you grace to labor much, both in writing and speaking, against the workers who have sought to have their hand on the rudder even though they don’t know how to steer. I have experienced the fellowship of Christ’s sufferings more strongly in recent days than I have in a long time. This has compelled me to pray more in order to find comfort. I hope to see you soon and to speak more in person.
Your brother, sharing in the work,
Johan
