Letter to Aksel Smith, 1909/12/13

Collected Writings Volume 1 • 1890 - 1911
Horten, December 13, 1909
Dear brother Aksel,

Thank you for your unusually long letter, which I read to the brothers and sisters at a well-attended meeting yesterday and then sent it on to Father today.

I also received a long letter from Father today, in which he mentions that God is working in Berglioth. I’m enclosing the letter, but I would like you to return it when you can. I have just written home replying to some of the questions that were most pertinent. As far as I can see, Father is getting closer and closer each time he writes. With regard to this “breathing in the Spirit,” I wrote that we should be on guard against presumptuous assertions; that we inhale air which consists of oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, and that the work of God’s Spirit with us is to make our human spirit alive, and that this really has nothing to do with breathing.

Father says that the body of sin and the body of death are the same thing. I believe that the body of sin is the sinful element in our human spirit which permeates our body, whereas the body of death is our earthen vessel. The body of death is directly related to the body of sin. Let us say that the body of sin is the subjective element, and the body of death is the objective element. Our conscious mind has not yet been able to judge the things that are in the body of sin, but it has been able to judge the things that are in the body of death. This is certainly a difficult matter to interpret, but I wrote a little about it to Father because he mentioned it.

Christmas is approaching; it would be really nice if you could come here for the Christmas holidays. Pauline isn’t quite back to normal, but we hope things will go well over Christmas. Br. Ellefsen just stopped by and sends his greetings. Br. Brungot is expected home for Christmas. Yesterday we had the breaking of bread at Isachsen’s place.

There was a great deal in your letter, which Br. Berg and Isachsen took to heart. Br. Johansen is also very enthusiastic about these truths.

Just these few lines with a brotherly greeting from your devoted brother in Christ,

Johan

I believe that the Spirit has testified to Berglioth to refuse her suitors. I sensed the Spirit’s testimony in this area before she was converted. Maybe this is the reason she has said “No” to several. I mentioned this to Father.
