I was thankful for your good letter that came today. Day by day, God has given us grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. What you write is so true: There are common threads running all through Christianity. More and more we will feel the emptiness “without these threads.” These threads consist of wisdom and insight, which, like rays of sunlight, lead right into the Father heart of God. Everything depends on our personal life. This life must be lived in all of its various aspects: in battles, in victories, in sorrow, in joy, in evil report, in good report, in sufferings, in persecutions, etc. We need just as much individual training in the spiritual realm as we do in the military.
Yes, I believe that Br. Isachsen will be able to lead the meetings in the right way. I feel that this is not my task, but that it should be led by a man whom I can work together with. Br. Berg would not be able to have such a task, as he believed that he understood both the inward and the outward leadership, neither of which he was qualified for. Ever since my conversion, I have visited the friends and spoken with them one-on-one, and this is the work that I love the most. I have been very quiet at the meetings, and this has made it easy for carnal forces to take over the leadership. When things have gone off track, I have had to rectify the situation, which is why there has been a constant murmuring. But now Br. Isachsen can keep things going, and we can work together in a better way.
This switch took place so silently and triumphantly that we were all amazed. Br. Berg and the friends at Knudsen’s place are also in agreement. We are now thinking about renting a small meeting hall.
Little by little we are increasingly returning to the Biblical doctrine regarding the necessity of having servants in the church. Without them, carnal elements arise and bring the entire work to the brink of destruction. In every local church there are many who need milk, which is why an evangelist is best suited as an outward leader. Actually, we can say there is an outward leadership and an inward leadership. Paul entrusted Titus with the important task of appointing elders in every city. Consider how far “inward” Paul was in his ministry. If it was an honorable thing to be an overseer, how much more honorable it was to be the one who appointed the overseer. Greater still is the person who instructs the one who appoints the overseer. However, behind all of them is Christ Jesus Himself. The more important a person is in the world, the more they are separated from the multitudes. It’s just the same in Christ Jesus. Anyone who seeks to please people must stay on the surface where the people are. But the more we seek God’s honor, the more we withdraw from positions that are honorable in the eyes of man, in order to please God. This, in turn, makes us more and more qualified for the inner ministry. Tit. 1, from verse 5. Moses appointed leaders over groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. Ex. 18:25. These things were written for our instruction.
“Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘If you will walk in My ways, and if you will keep My commandment, then you shall also judge My house, and likewise have charge of My courts; I will give you places to walk among these who stand here.’ ” Zech. 3:7.
We are the house of God. This house must be judged with a just, spiritual judgment, for the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God.
But we must look after His outer court. The outer court consists of those who have received the forgiveness of sins. We must take care of them; we cannot judge them.
I’m not saying that we can do all this ourselves or that we have the gifts for the task, but God will give us leaders. Solomon was also given leaders for the various tasks, but he had to keep everything together.
I believe and am convinced that in Christ this is exactly the way it is. How unspeakably beautiful this is. The more invisible you become, the more you can reign with Him, for we have a great High Priest over the house of God. Here we can see that Christ rules over the house of God, but we are God’s co-workers.
There was a ministry within the veil, and it was from within that the children of Israel awaited their orders and answers. Let us press in, both in life and in deed.
Read Ex. 28:30. Aaron was to carry the Urim and Thummim on the breastplate, over his heart; these signify light and perfection. By these things they could inquire of the Lord. It is the same now. If we have light in a matter and are perfect (according to our conscience), we can inquire of the Lord, and He will answer us.
Yesterday we talked about how we are going to receive a new name that no one knows except the person who receives it. Rev. 2:17. Just as Jesus means “Savior” and Cephas means “rock,” etc., the name we receive will be a concentrated description of our entire existence in Christ Jesus. No one in the past, present, or future will have exactly the same qualities or tasks that you have, for example. In order to characterize your entire being and the content of your life in a comprehensive way, God gives you a name that no one knows but you. This name is so perfect that you will clearly understand that the One who gave it to you searched your heart and your soul long ago. This, in turn, produces a reverence in the depths of your soul for the God who was able to give you such a name.
Warmest greetings from your brother,
Johan
