Thank you very much for your very good letter, together with the newspaper clippings and the little book about speaking in tongues, which I will return.
It’s very praiseworthy of you all in Kristiansand that you press forward, despite this scorn and mockery that is hailing down—on you who only a few months ago were highly regarded according to the ways of this world. May God reward you all abundantly in this time, and in the world to come, eternal life. In God’s eyes nothing is as precious as zeal, for God Himself is a zealous God.
The Methodist minister’s defense was a defense of himself and his church. Such a defense is worthless. As you say, it’s no wonder he is near the point of despair. On the other hand, the way in which the “Tuesday meeting” was defended in the meeting house was good. “Konalabris” was quite masterly; perhaps he is a theater critic by profession, because he did a good job.
But thanks and praise to God that we have received a kingdom that isn’t shaken and isn’t moved. If some peoples’ earthen vessels are shaking, it is because of sin in the body. But we will, one day, have a body which will not “tremble” because of the inner power.
We often have meetings at Tveten, which is between Horten and Borre, and we’ve been to four different places out there. There are several beloved brothers and sisters living in that area who testify and pray very powerfully. Schoolmaster Ulsten’s wife, and most likely all her children, rejoice with pure joy. Ulsten himself has not joined us, but he is supportive of his wife and even suffers reproach because of what is happening in his home. In an evening meeting on Saturday at Tveten, in the home of Mathisen the shoemaker, Sister Ulsten saw three tongues of fire. I had just prayed that God might send tongues of fire, and instantly she saw three tongues of fire—God be praised for everything.
A young girl, 18-20 years of age, who also lives out there, is paralyzed in one leg and can hardly walk. I have been thinking a lot about asking God to heal her. I just found out yesterday, as we were walking home, that she is paralyzed, and since then she has been on my mind. I don’t have the gift of healing, but God, who is rich in mercy, is willing to restore her health, so that His name may also be glorified by this. I have also asked God to heal you from your illness, while thanking Him for you in my prayers. God hears prayers, and whether there be devils or demons, they must depart. It is God’s power that makes us into what we should be. Hallelujah!
Kristian often mentions: “Askel (Aksel) says: ‘Let Him in.’” He remembers you sang: “With all my heart I let Him in; not I, but He shall guide, and then all things will go His way.” Yes, all things will go His way—exactly, and then all is well. The Navy sailor has already gained a great deal of insight, and it is quite remarkable to hear him. Br. Berg prophesies; he also trembles violently, so people are really startled by it.
As far as I’m concerned, they can speak in tongues, tremble, and prophecy as much as they like, provided things stay on track spiritually speaking. I will help, according to the grace God gives me. However, when there are many different types of people gathered together, we should restrain ourselves for their sake; if someone wants to be beside himself before God, he can do that on other occasions. But no one should be so restrained that the Spirit cannot act freely; yet we must lead with wisdom in our heart.
You also want to serve the Lord full-time. A door first needs to be opened, and then you can present yourself to God, as certain volunteers did in 1905. God will then open a way for His volunteer reserves when it is the right time. For that matter, we have more than enough to do where we are while we are waiting, as long as we remain in the city of Ephraim. John 11, from verse 47, as well as Deut. 33:13-18. There—outside the reach of the Jews—we become strong as wild oxen.
Br. Kristoffersen, who is gentleness personified, has now been totally rejected from both the meeting house and the church association. I’m too hard—maybe he’s too gentle. Salt is for salting and sugar for sweetening. But if we are to be rejected, whether we bring salt or sugar, I’ll be happy to sit outside the camp having the satisfaction that we gave them salt and chastisement as long as we were within their reach, as opposed to offering them sugar and still being rejected. They sit there year in and year out as dry as dust, praying for the Spirit. When God does send the Spirit, they say it’s of the devil and that it’s unsound, disturbing, etc. There is no better remedy for such people than to really let loose with a message in tongues, so they either all take to their heels, or we get rid of them with a wet mop. My speech is spiritual, not temporal, for it is just as important for our salvation to keep the devil away as it is to eat from green pastures. God has given me a glorious mission at the meetings to keep the spirit of opposition at bay. The Spirit comes over me to speak in tongues and interpret directly against the opposition, and it really clears the air. How wonderfully God orders everything.
Wishing you all the very best. It is always a great comfort and encouragement to hear from you and the friends. Greet them all. Greetings to Helga. Greet everyone at home.
Christianity is not some external facade, rather Isa. 8:16, Prov. 3:13-19, and Eccl. 8:1. Not so with the wicked, because Isa. 3:9. Hag. 1:7.
We can rent Betel—Kristi Menighed’s meeting hall—for 4 kroner each time. I am putting up a fence, and this afternoon I sank four posts into the ground. Pauline, Kristian, and Tulla are fine. Ellefsen is more zealous than ever. Well, I’d best be off to bed. Warmest greetings.
Yours,
Johan
