This morning I received your good letter dated the 20th of this month. Thank you very much.
This is now the third time I have sat down to write you a letter. I did not send the first two drafts. I think those first two letters were more of an exercise for me personally because the things that I am trying to convey did not come out as clearly as I had wished. It is also a very comprehensive topic and is perhaps easier to understand than to explain. Lately God has been working with me regarding this subject, and with His gracious help I will try to explain these precious truths in writing.
There are three kinds of seed:
Mankind is the product of these three kinds of seed. God’s Word said that the Seed of the woman would crush the serpent’s head. This Word of God was the incorruptible seed that became flesh (the Seed of the woman) and dwelt among us, since the Word became flesh. However, the Word contained more than just becoming flesh; it was the Seed of the woman that was to crush the serpent’s head. God had already cast the devil out of heaven, so God no longer had a battle with the devil. So it was not God who was to crush the serpent’s head; it was the Seed of the woman—man—who was to do that. When He (the One whom the promise was about) came, He said concerning Himself, “Behold, I have come—in the volume of the book it is written of Me—to do Your will, O God.” Heb. 10:7. The Word, which God spoke—that the Seed of the woman shall crush the serpent’s head—had now come in flesh, and His food was to do God’s will. God’s will was that the Seed of the woman should crush the serpent’s head. It was man, as the Seed of the woman, who was to be victorious by the Word that God had spoken. Therefore Christ offered Himself in the power of an eternal Spirit by being obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. He suffered death according to the flesh but was made alive according to the Spirit. The Seed of the woman was established as a triumphant victor over the serpent’s head. As such, the Seed of the woman—the Son of Man—is the representative of mankind and high priest before the Father.
Now every person who is dead to the law by the body of Christ is included in the Mediator and has become one with Him. These words—the Seed of the woman shall crush the serpent’s head—must now be fulfilled through us. That is why we read over and over again, if “you” would heed my commandments, etc., if “you” by the Spirit, etc. This “you” is the Seed of the woman that is to crush the serpent’s head. To have Christ as my life is the same as crushing the serpent’s head. To have Christ as my life is the same as being victorious over principalities and powers. In the death of Christ, all flesh was judged as useless when it comes to serving God. For this reason, the law testifies within the fleshly tablets of our heart that even man’s best works are nothing but filthy rags. Therefore, considering Christ—in His light—we judge thus: if One died for all, all are dead, because the law, written on the fleshly tablets of the heart, testifies within each person that man by himself is useless.
Much could be said about these things, but they are so interconnected that it’s too early for me to express them in writing or with words. We must conclude that we understand in part and prophesy in part. However, the things of which we speak are not isolated parts, but a perfect whole.
My heart’s desire was that with the help of these imperfect strokes of my pen, you would be able to see what lies behind the words and be able to grasp what is more perfect.
Hearty greetings from your brother and son according to the flesh—in judgment and death, being made alive and abiding in the Mediator,
Johan
