Letter to Theodor Ellefsen, 1915/03/08

Collected Writings Volume 2 • 1912 - 1917
Valkyrjen, Moldøen, March 8, 1915
Dear Br. Theodor Ellefsen,
God’s perfect peace.

Thank you very much for your good letter and for the letter from Sr. Dannell. I was very happy to hear from you, and the letter from the sister in Finnmark was no ordinary letter. It gave me great joy to read it, and I am sure I have your permission to pass it on, once Br. Kvalheim has read it. You can get it back later since I will add this note to it: “Return to Br. Th. Ellefsen.” I plan to send it to Aksel and Aslaksen, and maybe Karl. Actually, it should go to Br. Johan Olsen as well. Maybe Aksel will use an excerpt from it for Skjulte Skatter. It is a great grace from God to win such souls.

We’ve had meetings here that have drawn a packed house, but now I have stopped having them in order to speak together with a few individuals about the inner life in God. The deeper we go, the smaller the flock becomes. Kvalheim is doing very well. His wife had been somewhat bitter since her husband distanced himself from everyone; she couldn’t understand that. But she has been sick in bed for a while now and during that time has read through all the 1914 issues of Skjulte Skatter. Through this she received light, and yesterday we visited her in her room, and she was absolutely jubilant. She even understood that God condemned sin in Christ’s flesh. So Br. Kvalheim’s wife is along with him now. Another somewhat older widow is beginning to lay hold of something. I received a letter from Br. Johan Olsen who is thinking about going to Ålesund, which is where we also will be next week, God willing.

My father just passed away in Christ Jesus. His last words were: “My desire is to have a greater fullness of Him who is the way, the truth, and the life,” and then he peacefully passed away. The funeral was held three days later, so I was unable to travel 800 km in time to attend. That really hit me hard. During his lifetime he was zealous for God, and the fear of the Lord was his delight. Although he was not able to lead us into a deeper spiritual life, he did show us the way to it. May God bless his spirit and his work. He was a prince in his time, and the lowly and oppressed always found him to be a faithful support and help.

Let us now use our lives in the service of God, so that the old man can be put off, more and more, and the new man can be put on. I’m happy that the brothers are battling faithfully in their respective localities. It seems Ole Skiaker’s illness has taken a turn for the worse. Johan Olsen is a good and faithful man. Greet Br. Risnes warmly from me. The world is dark and confining, and it’s good we are on a journey toward a better home, as my father wrote in his song. My deep desire, more than ever before, is to lay aside every weight and run the race. I must say, together with Paul, that I count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord. Aksel and Helga are in Kristansand S. I am expecting a letter from them soon.

When Christ, who is our life, appears, we shall be like Him and shall see Him as He is. Hallelujah. Then we’ll meet our loved ones. Let us always, for the rest of our lives, live according to God’s will and not according to human desires. Soon it will all be over, and we shall receive our reward according to our faithfulness and our work.

God has been with you and has blessed your work. Always take this to heart: continue in this work and in this faithfulness, so that your reward can be great in the eternal dwellings. Pray for me as well, that the word of the Lord can prosper and that I am able to preach it as it ought to be preached, with purity and reverence, as the apostle exhorts us.

Warm greetings.

Your devoted,

J. O. Smith

Also greet Br. Lohne, if you meet him.

Address: Ålesund, starting March 15.
