Letter to Aksel Smith, 1915/10/09

Collected Writings Volume 2 • 1912 - 1917
Valkyrjen, Ålesund, October 9, 1915
Dear brother Aksel,

Thank you for your good letter and for the manuscript from Br. Berg. As you mentioned, it’s not easy to understand what Berg means without knowing him personally. I understand what he is getting at, and he means it well, but it is unlikely that other people will get light from it. Also, many of his sentences are written incorrectly, in terms of grammar and structure. Just leave it out; we can’t include it in the paper.

It is difficult to get enough material for Skjulte Skatter. Many times I have taken pen in hand to write something, but I’m unable to write anything until God specifically leads me. We rarely receive anything from Br. Aslaksen and Br. Hansen.

I have written before about the situation here. Br. Brune told me yesterday that one of the opposers had visited Gunda Willersrud offering financial support, but that she had turned him down.

I hear you are in agreement with Br. Kvalheim that there is also a need for financial support to promote the truths of God. In this location, the majority of those who have received the truth are low-paid factory girls, but they are zealous.

Any day now, we are expecting a formal general meeting to be called to make a decision regarding the meeting hall, since all the Arctic fishermen have now returned.

I am enclosing a letter from Br. Johan Lohne, who has a great deal in common with Br. Berg. He has now capitulated, as you can see, and has even written to Barratt. A delegation from here, consisting of two men (Kvalsvik and Relling), has gone to visit Barratt. Relling wrote an article in Korsets Seier from Ålesund—it was very short. The most influential people in the assembly here have become our most bitter opponents, and everything has been turned upside down. The amazing thing is that it is the preaching of the word of God that has managed to cause all of this. This time, we arrived here on October 5 instead of September 15. The opposers were delighted that the Valkyrjen hadn’t come, and they were even more pleased when they heard that we, like the destroyer Troll, would be anchored offshore. But God didn’t want it that way, and we are now anchored at a dock in the center of town.

Two sisters from Ålesund are attending Hansen’s meetings in Kristiania, and they are very happy to be there. Please ask Br. Hansen to make sure that some of the sisters there look after them a bit.

I’m waiting to hear more about the collection boxes. No doubt someone will have to be responsible for how the funds are managed.

Warm greetings from your brother,

Johan
