Letter to Aksel Smith, 1917/02/11

Collected Writings Volume 2 • 1912 - 1917
Bergen, February 11, 1917. (Day watch)
Dear brother Aksel,
Peace.

Thanks for your good letter and for the letter you included from Br. Kahan, who is now in much tribulation. You had written two letters, but a page from one of the letters was missing.

Yesterday (Sunday) we were at the meeting hall at Tyskebryggen. Br. Pedersen Buròe was with us all day. He asked me to greet you. Yesterday morning he spoke first, and then when I got up after him and covered several topics, he thought I was picking apart or criticizing what he had said. He then got up and tried to clarify things. When he was finished, Br. Hågensen and I left. He then ran after us and wanted to clarify things even more; but we continued on our way, after telling him that it is unfortunate when a person is only a priest for the people and plays the hypocrite before them.

Things went better in the afternoon. They spoke about Christ’s return, spoke in tongues, and prophesied about that, and were really fired up. After this, I read to them from 2 Thessalonians 2, that they should by no means allow themselves to be deceived by spirit or by letter, but whether Christ comes tomorrow or the day after, what they needed to do was to follow Daniel 12 and purify themselves, as we ought to do in the last days. That is quite different from allowing ourselves to be deceived. Then I spoke about the man of sin who is to be revealed, etc. This cooled them all down quite a bit.

They understand that we keep to what is written in the Bible, but they say they still don’t understand. On the other hand, we understand every single bit of what they say, but their words do not really meet the deepest needs of the heart. Br. Hågensen and I spoke about this yesterday and concluded that this is because the testimony of the blood is lacking in their personal lives. They have the Spirit and the water, but not the blood. They have no doubt received the testimony of the Spirit and the testimony of the water through the blood of Christ, but the fear of God in their personal lives has not brought them to bloodshed. This veil (the flesh) cannot comprehend what is on the other side, and yet we cannot be satisfied with anything less than what is behind the veil. Herein lies the difference.

Br. Risnes has resigned from his job in Sarpsborg and will head west. He’ll probably visit you before he leaves. Br. Hågensen is always seeking to get a deeper understanding. He is gifted in that way, and he is also very zealous—he is at the ready day and night. Nothing is more important to him than God and His word, as well as the brothers. I think he will become an excellent co-worker. He is thinking of settling down in Kristiania. I have tried to get him to surrender absolutely and completely to what the Spirit reveals to him, so that he trusts himself when it comes to these things. I think he has made progress in doing this, because he is rejoicing in the Spirit. God willing, we will leave this Thursday for Haugsholmen or Ålesund. Greet everyone at home as well as all the other friends.

Warm greetings from your brother,

Johan
