Letter to Sivert Bolsønes, 1917/12/04

Collected Writings Volume 2 • 1912 - 1917

[The letter below was presumably incorrectly dated, and was most likely written on December 4th, based on the contents and the context, with respect to the other letters from this period.]

Viking, Hammerfest, November 4, 1917
Dear Br. Sivert Bolsønes,
God’s peace.

We are anchored here, waiting for the Frithjof, which will relieve us on the 6th.

By the time you get this letter, I expect we will be well on our way to Bergen. I am sending you a number of letters, along with a photo of the sisters in Drøbak, where there has been a lot of progress. My wife mentioned that a preacher named Ystrøm, who has worked to bring about revival in Horten and has won a whole flock of young people there, has now begun to receive the word, with Karl Pedersen’s help. They say he has changed completely, and Karl leads their meetings in his absence.

Karl Pedersen used to be quite cantankerous, as you know; but then he suddenly lost his only daughter to diphtheria. That took a real toll on him; he ran from room to room, writhing in agony. God knows what is needed to form and mold His people. I hope that everything will go well now. There is a spirit of awakening both in Drøbak and in Horten. Sr. Gunda Willersrud is probably in Ålesund now; her labor in Drøbak has not been in vain. May God bless His people everywhere, so we can serve one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. I am a bit concerned about Ålesund, since I haven’t heard from them for a long time. They are all young and inexperienced on these inner ways. But they have shown a good attitude and much zeal and godly fear, so I believe they will be saved from all of Satan’s snares.

In Vardø there is now a small, solid congregation. Several people from the Salvation Army have joined them; even the lieutenant resigned from the Salvation Army and went home on the 26th of last month. He testified to the soldiers before he left and said that their lives needed to change; things were not as they should be. The Salvation Army officers did everything possible to keep him, but to no avail. On Sunday, we had a Bible study in the hospital in Vadsø with some of the Deaconess nurses and with Sr. Sigrid Dannell, who has been with us for some time.

Please forward all these letters, with warm greetings, to the friends in Ålesund. Send them to Sr. Anna Belden. She will read them to the friends down there. Ask her to send them on to Didrik Kvalheim in Moldøen, with warm greetings to all the friends there. I also asked Br. Kvalheim to send the letters to Br. Johan Lohne in Espeland, via Bergen, with warm greetings to all the friends close to him. Br. Johan Lohne can then return the photo and letters to me in Haugesund. This way, all of you can get an overview of where things currently stand and how the work is progressing.

Warm greetings to you and your family and to the church in your home, from your brother, sharing in the ministry and the tribulations,

J. O. Smith
