Letter to Emanuel Pettersen, 1913/04/20

Dear Br. Emanuel Pettersen,
God’s grace and peace.

Today I received a card from Br. O. Olafsen, from Buggebakken, Drøbak, and he mentioned that those who are there would like to have a conference during Pentecost. However, this appears to conflict with the decision that was made here during Easter that a conference would be held during that same time in Sarpsborg. Later, Br. Aslaksen wrote and said something about how several people would prefer May 17-18.

It would certainly be an expensive endeavor to first have a conference in Drøbak for Pentecost followed by one in Sarpsborg on May 17-18. But a decision should be made as soon as possible. Personally, I think Drøbak should be supported, both for the town’s own sake and for the surrounding districts. May God lead everything to be a true benefit for all of us. In uncertain situations where we have to choose between wants and needs, the needs should take precedence over the wants.

When God is in control, it is not easy to make decisions far in advance. We should wait for events to unfold and be ready to step in and help where it is needed. If it is to go well with us and if we are to serve the counsels of God in our lifetime, just as David did, then it is absolutely essential to pay attention to the times and the situations we are in.

Today I got a card from Aksel in Hønefoss; his health is improving daily.

I wrote Olafsen’s address on the front side in case you want to write to him. It may be his intention to have a conference in Sarpsborg on May 17-18 in addition to “a small conference” in Drøbak during Pentecost, as he said on the card. If the conference in Drøbak is advertised, the effect will be that not many will travel to Sarpsborg on May 17-18. Something should be done if that is the case. You know the circumstances in Sarpsborg and will be able to discern whether it is just something they want, or if there really is a need for several friends to gather there. I believe that this decision should be made with a focus on what is best for everyone.

I’m including Br. Olafsen’s card with this letter. It may be a good idea to forward the card to Aksel and Aslaksen in Hønefoss so that they can voice their opinion. Perhaps this letter should be included with it.

Greet all the dear friends.

Your brother in Christ Jesus,

Johan
