Servants
“Servants, be obedient to those who are your earthly masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as to Christ.” Verse 5.
What Paul writes here doesn’t quite fit in with the spirit of the times; but it fits in quite nicely with the Holy Spirit, for that Spirit was sent by the One who is without shadow of turning, an eternal Being who is the same yesterday, today—yes, forever. Servants are to carry out their work for their masters as for Christ Himself. They are to do so with fear and trembling, in simplicity of heart. When you do that, you’ll see that it invariably goes well, and you will always have God’s blessing.
Paul writes to Titus, “Bid servants to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are not to be refractory, nor to pilfer, but to show entire and true fidelity, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.” Titus 2:9-10. This exhortation can’t be misinterpreted; it doesn’t need any further explanation. Satan, of course, is armed with an ample supply of deceitful interpretations, and people are only too eager to be deceived by him; but these good, old, solid exhortations stand like a rock against the shifting spirit of the times with its subtle tricks and cunning deceptions, and speak throughout all ages with conviction and clarity to God-fearing, devoted souls.
