Why Have I Found Favor in Your Eyes, Since I Am a Foreigner?

Ruth realized that Boaz knew her, and he was helping her precisely where she needed help. Such great grace poured out over a humble soul makes him ask questions. How is it that I, who was a stranger, darkened in my understanding, foreign to a life in God, dead in trespasses and sins, could find such grace? Ruth’s unworthiness gave her a longing and caused her to inquire after more of this unimagined love. The mighty man honored and exalted the lowly Ruth by caring for her. This is like our Master. He ate and drank with sinners. He chooses that which is nothing to put to shame those who think they are something.

David was despised by his wife when he danced before the Lord while he was leading the ark of the Lord up to the city of David. She held him in contempt because he had uncovered himself in the eyes of his maidservants, as one of the base fellows. David reacted to this contempt with the following words: “I will humble myself even more than this, and be lowly in my own eyes, and I will be honored together with the maidservants you spoke of.” 2 Sam. 6:20-22. David abased himself just like Boaz did and was honored together with the lowly, and at the same time he was like Ruth who occupied the lowliest place. This is the mind and the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
