“And You Are Complete in Him . . . .”
“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him . . . .” Col. 2:9-10.
The fact that this does not apply to the average believer is obvious to all. It would be presumptuous to say that this is their state.
Then this is the question: Who are these “you”? Or, to whom does this apply?
It applies to those who are crucified with Christ, who are dead with Him. It applies to those whom the Scriptures call gods. Jesus said, “The Scripture cannot be broken.” John 10:35. The words of Scripture are authoritative regardless of what our human reasoning and our feelings think about them!
According to the above-mentioned scriptures the image of two containers that are connected by a pipe and are fitted with a valve that can be opened and closed comes to mind. Through living faith in this glorious truth, the valve stays open so that the divine fullness is available at any time and in any situation, so that we always have everything we need in order to live an overcoming life that is pleasing to God. Just imagine how great and how good that is!
On the other hand, the supply is stopped because of unbelief and unfaithfulness. Then the supply fails, and you fall short and cause God’s name and the gospel to be reproached.
Then the valve on the supply pipe is closed, and you can often see that when you are present! It is quite obvious that the valve on the ascending pipe is closed, and then you know what you can expect.
The result will (unfortunately) be something totally different than the fullness of the Godhead!
Just think how glorious it is when the upward connection is completely open, when only good things flow out in spite of all the evil we may meet! Then, there is heaven on earth.
