- What Does Faith Say?
- Faultless
By Elias Aslaksen If there is one thing people feel sure about, it is that it is impossible to be faultless in this world. And yet the Scriptures state the exact opposite—not that it is easy, but that it is difficult yet possible. The fact that it is possible is quite simply stated by Jesus’ words, “But with God all things are possible,” and “All things are possible to him who believes.” Matt. 19:26; Mark 9:23. However, it is also stated directly and clearly in several other places; for example, in Ephesians 5:27: “Not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish.” In other words, there is nothing to point a finger at or put your finger on, nothing to comment on. This means perfect according to the conscience, according to the light we have. It definitely does not mean that a greater light does not find more to be judged in my life. Sanctification continues. Paul states this plainly in several places; for example, in 1 Corinthians 4:4: “For I know nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this . . . .” Unfortunately, most people definitely cannot truthfully say this; on the contrary, they know very well that all kinds of things should be different in their life. They know very well that they are not without fault. However, what most of them do not know—because they do not believe it—is that this is the very thing they are called to, and that they can achieve it, rightly understood. We find another powerful word that plainly states our high calling, in James 1:4: “Patience must lead to perfect works, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” Perfect and complete also means faultless. In other words, then you possess every virtue and no vices. And in the Swedish Bible translation it is stated even more clearly: “Faultless, lacking nothing.” We are innocent in this matter, because this high calling did not arise in our own hearts, but in God’s heart. He has willed it like this because of His unspeakably great love. He has willed to share it with us to this great extent. Thus it is not sin to believe this and seek it! On the contrary, it is a great sin to doubt it. Jesus said that “the Spirit will convict the world of sin because they do not believe . . . .” Let us believe it, seek it, and obtain it!
