By Elias Aslaksen “Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong?” 1 Cor. 6:7. If you are in the right and if the court agrees with you, you are (for example) awarded ten thousand kroner. Paul writes that what was gain to him before, he now reckoned as loss; in other words, the lawsuit was a loss. However, this wasn’t the only loss; there is also a far greater and weightier loss: one has acted contrary to this Word of God; one has transgressed it and been disobedient to it! What a serious loss! Loss upon loss! Phil. 3:7-8. We are called to be a fragrance to God! However, this kind of gain smells bad! 2 Cor. 2:15-16. Therefore it is still one more loss. Chapter 6 of 1 Corinthians begins with this question: “Dare any of you . . . ?”—do any of you presume to, do any of you have the audacity to do something so foolish and meaningless? Even if you were right, it would be utterly silly. How much worse is it if you are not even in the right? And what will you answer to, “Why do you not rather accept wrong?” The obvious answer is that one loves earthly things instead of loving God and keeping His commandments, and instead of loving the person whom you are suing.
