The Unanswered Question

“While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, ‘What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?’ They said to Him, ‘The Son of David.’ He said to them, ‘How then does David in the Spirit call Him “Lord,” saying: “The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool’”? If David then calls Him “Lord,” how is He his Son?’ And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.” Matt. 22:41-46.

For most people this question still remains unanswered, apart from all superficial, round-about answers. At that time people would not believe that He was the Son of God, but now people will not believe that He really was the Son of Man, of the seed of David.

We discover the solution to the mystery when we believe both of these facts. The answer is: He was the Son of God from eternity past, by whom all things were created; thus, according to the Spirit, He was in truth David’s Lord. In the fullness of time He was conceived by the Holy Spirit in Mary’s womb, and according to the flesh was born into the world by her of the seed of David; thus He also became the Son of David.
