“I Am the Root and Offspring of David.”
When Jesus was here in the days of His flesh, God let the children praise Christ manifested in the flesh, as they cried out, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” Matt. 21:15. Why didn’t God let them cry out: “Hosanna to the Son of God,” for He was certainly, in truth, the Son of God as well?
The reason was that He “likewise” had taken upon Himself our flesh and blood, for our sakes, and this was what had now become so especially great and joyful and significant!
When Jesus from His heavenly estate and His throne revealed Himself to the apostle John on the Isle of Patmos, one of the very last things He said was: “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.” Rev. 22:16.
This is what was so great for the Captain of our salvation, when He sat on His Father’s throne after finishing His course here in this world! This is also is what is so great for all God-fearing people, the saints who are still in the days of their flesh, fighting the same battle, on the way to the same throne! All praise to our Lord!
That which is so great and glorious, so hopeful and comforting for all the saints during their sojourn, is that the mighty Son of God, who is now seated on the Father’s throne as Conqueror, sits there as the Root and Offspring of David, as the One who in the days of His flesh partook of the same flesh that we have and thus had the same temptations as we have, the same difficulties to overcome.
Therefore, we now have every reason to hope that by the same Spirit and power, and by the same godly fear and faithfulness, we shall overcome as He overcame, as Jesus Himself says in Revelation 3:21: “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”
