Are We Greater Than Christ?

The Scriptures tell us explicitly that we can and shall overcome sin. In the book of Revelation we read of future events, about those who have reached the goal, about those who have followed the Lamb wherever He went in this world. They overcame sin and were blameless.

If we can overcome with sin in the flesh (1 John 1:8), then what should we think about Christ who, supposedly without sin in the flesh, had to battle so vehemently in order to avoid sinning!? Heb. 5:7. In that case, we (of whom it is written in Revelation 14:5) would be better overcomers than He and would therefore be greater than He! How utterly meaningless and absurd!!!

It would be meaningless to ask us to follow His steps if, in the days of His flesh, He had had some other kind of flesh—“holy” flesh—with no human will to overcome, and if He had not been made like His brethren in all things.

Then, if we overcame, we would be better than He. If a weak man wins the same victory as a strong man, the weak man is worthy of greater honor. It is no great feat for a giant to crush a gnat! It certainly wouldn’t take a great effort!

People can say and do much that is meaningless, but God’s Word and His work are full of meaning. The full meaning is: We have the same power of the Spirit (that is why He sent the Spirit) in order to walk in the same steps with the same flesh, and we have the same power of the Spirit to overcome the same difficulties! He who is the firstborn and preeminent among many brethren has gone ahead of us as our forerunner; and we, His brethren in spirit and truth, are following Him on the same way. How meaningful! Praise God, both now and forever more!

How unspeakably great He becomes to us!!! And how unspeakably good He is who actually allows us to partake of the same glory and greatness! What man, who has truly had his eyes opened to Jesus’ greatness, goodness and glory, and to our high and holy calling, would not with joy and thankfulness willingly and quickly forsake and give up everything in this world to follow in the Lamb’s steps as long as he lives?

We certainly are not greater than Christ—no indeed! But think of this, that through godly fear (Heb. 5:7-9) we can partake of His greatness!
