“As a Root Out of Dry Ground”
“For He shall grow up before Him as a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground.” Isa. 53:2.
It was certainly not according to the Spirit that He came out of dry ground. Rom. 1:4. Therefore it must have been according to the flesh that He came out of dry ground. Rom. 1:3. If He had had some sort of “holy” flesh, it would have been utterly inappropriate—indeed, blasphemous—to characterize this as dry ground.
However, simply because He likewise partook of the same flesh as ours (see Heb. 2:14)—that flesh against which the law was powerless (Rom. 8:3)—it was perfectly appropriate to prophesy: “Like a root out of dry ground.”
Not one person had been able to “bear fruit” in this flesh, i.e., to carry out the will of God completely; but the very Son of God would one day be manifested in this flesh, in this dry ground, and for Him it would succeed! This root coming from the race of humanity would bear fruit! Glory be to His holy name!
