Conception and Birth
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.” Matt. 1:18. “For that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” V. 20. “So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.” Luke 2:6.
He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. The miracle was in the conception. The birth was natural.
Romans 1:1-4 gives us the matter in brief. The gospel of God concerning His Son contains two main points:
It is stated the same way in Romans 9:5: “Of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is God over all things, blessed in all eternity. Amen.” This is the very thing that is so unspeakably great and mysterious: He took upon Himself our flesh and with it our sin. He did this in order to conquer and destroy sin completely, behind its own seemingly impenetrable line of defense. Or, to put it another way, He went into the strong man’s house, against whom neither the law nor the prophets could prevail, and overcame the strong man! Hallelujah!—just as these clear and precious words in Hebrews 2:14 state: “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise partook of the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil.”
O how great and glorious and wonderful it is that He who rejoiced before the Father’s countenance, and who at that time knew no sin, humbled Himself so deeply as to put on the flesh of which we are partakers, so that sin could be condemned in it! We will praise Him exceedingly for this all the days of our life, and throughout all eternity!
