“He Renounced Being Like God”

“Who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but of His own accord renounced being like God, taking the form of a servant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him . . . .” Phil. 2:6-9.

The Son was equal with the Father from eternity past, and all things were created by the Son Col. 1:15-17. But in order to save us, to atone for our sin, and in order to make a way for us into the Holy of Holies, He renounced being like God and instead was made like His brethren in all things. Heb. 2:17. This tells us that He was not like the Father in the days of His flesh, but was made like His brethren. When at last He was perfected (Heb. 5:9-10), He was again like His Father.
