I received your very good letter. Thank you for it. We have had some amazing prayer meetings here in Horten. I asked God to give me the ability to speak in tongues—if it was His will—and on January 28 at 11 o’clock in the evening the Spirit came over me; my jaws started moving, and my tongue began to speak a wonderful language. Since then, I have been at the Salvation Army where they have been holding some large meetings. There, too, God prompted me to speak in tongues. People quickly surrounded us when they heard it; some of them started crying, and there was great astonishment in the entire assembly. Major Klingsaid of the Salvation Army has received a gift of prophecy, so he speaks prophetic words such as: confess your sins, confess your sins, confess your sins. He shouts this out until sweat runs down his cheeks. He also shouts out other sentences at the top of his lungs. The day before yesterday, we met after the meeting, and the Spirit came over the captain, and as tall as he was, he fell flat on his back, crying out with all his might. Later he told us that a great light appeared to him, and an invisible force seized him by both shoulders and pushed him down. He experienced a glory beyond anything he could imagine. Br. Berg, Ellefsen, and several others are being affected by this purifying power of the Spirit to a tremendous degree. They received it by putting old matters in order and thereby purifying themselves.
I am glad God has given you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in His knowledge and that you have come to sufficient independence in Christ so that you understand and dare to understand to discern this. I have often thought about the way Tønnesen, the soap maker, answered you: that when you throw stones at a pack of dogs, it is the one who is hit that yelps. The fact that his answer put you in a tight spot was unbearable for me, since I am hurt when any of those who have received the anointing of the Spirit are harmed. But if your thoughts had not been busy with getting out of a difficult situation according to the flesh, you would probably have found a way out; because unto God the Lord belong escapes from death and from all kinds of tight spots.
Jesus’ mind was to let the little dogs receive bread; but when a person gives them stones, and even throws stones at them and rejoices when one of them starts to howl, then they must be way off track. And just the fact that he called—or compared you to—a dog clearly showed that he couldn’t possibly esteem you in love as better than himself; instead he himself sat on a pedestal and threw stones at the pack of dogs. It is fine to keep quiet when you can win a person by doing so, but it is also fine to answer a fool according to his folly, so that he does not become wise in his own eyes.
You would probably enjoy a visit to Horten to see Kristian and Johanne. It would be very nice if you could come. We have enough space in the living room, and Br. Ellefsen and Br. Berg would certainly enjoy talking with you. You can be sure there are some strange people here; it is not like Kristiansand. John wrote that Br. Aanensen had been at Rasmussen’s meeting, and when he did not partake in the breaking of bread with them, it ruffled some feathers; but Aanensen defended himself with meekness.
You are so full that if you want to receive more, your heart will need to be enlarged. No doubt it can be enlarged, but this enlargement cannot be measured with a caliper; for Christ had an ordinary body like us, but even though it was so restricted, the whole fullness of God dwelt in Him bodily. Concerning spiritual gifts, we should pursue love, and in love earnestly desire the gifts; for that is the most excellent way. Paul could correct those who used the gift of tongues in their foolishness, because, as he points out: “I speak with tongues more than you all,” etc. In other words, the Spirit of wisdom will teach us that the gifts are useful in many ways.
Loving greetings to you from your brother,
Johan
