Letter to Aksel Smith, 1907/03/02

Collected Writings Volume 1 • 1890 - 1911
Horten, March 2, 1907
Dear brother Aksel,

Thank you so much for your good letter, from which we see that the Spirit has begun to work in Kristiansand. The mind of the Spirit is life and peace, but that peace is not with the world and its priests. I have not come to bring peace, but discord. There will be discord wherever we go, because the peacefulness of sin and the sleep of the dead gets disturbed, and of course, those who are in such a state say it is of Beelzebub. However, we are not of those who draw back, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.

A local priest here came to Sigurd Kristoffersen’s home and expressed his misgivings about speaking in tongues, urging him to stop doing that at the Christian Association (YMCA). Kristoffersen said that he obeys God rather than men, and he intends to continue doing so. There were some ladies who had run out, and those were probably the ones the priest was afraid of. Kristoffersen said that he (the priest) and those who had sent him should prostrate themselves in the dust. Finally they prayed together, the priest first. But when the Spirit came upon Kristoffersen to speak in tongues, the priest ran out in the middle of the prayer. It was most likely too hot for him to dwell with the devouring fire. From this we can understand what kind of priesthood they belong to. There are priests for this world, and there are priests for God.

Oh, the spirit of vanity, which only knows people according to the flesh and which is greatly impressed and bows down in worship when a person comes in wearing fine apparel and rings on their fingers. By no means should we ever offend such a person by speaking in tongues, prophecy, or the word of truth in knowledge or wisdom. How disgusting! What a farce. From now on we regard no man according to the flesh. Hallelujah, this is clear! All flesh is grass, and the glory of man as the flower of the grass. We must be unclothed, not further clothed. We must be formed to be like Christ in His death. If we walk in the light, the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin. Not everyone who cries out Lord, Lord will enter into the kingdom of God, but rather everyone who does the will of God. God’s will is always contrary to our self-will; this is the new and living way through the veil, that is His flesh. For He always said: “Not My will, but Yours, be done.” By this will we have been sanctified by the sacrifice of Christ once for all. Therefore it is written: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification.” We gain access by going right through our flesh (i.e., our sinful nature), just as Christ went right through Himself, since He prayed unceasingly: “Not My will, but Yours, be done.” From this we understand that He had a will which had to be put to death. The mystery of the entire work of Christ is contained in the putting to death of this will.

Many greetings to those at home. I was happy that Father has been so powerfully visited by the Spirit. Greet Tallaksen; I am pleased to hear that the power has gotten hold of him too. Also greet Br. Aanensen, and don’t forget John, if you see him.

I will—God willing—sail on the Sleipner in May. Berglioth is in Kristiania. A letter from Father is waiting for her; we don’t know her address. She is coming back here again.

Hope things are still progressing in Kristiansand. It has been a great joy for us here to hear from you. We have continued to have prayer meetings, and the power is mightily present. Br. Berg is now restful, because he had a vision the other night: he was wide awake and sensed the Spirit’s power moving through him from his left shoulder straight through his body. In the end, he saw his own body as an outward casing (earthen vessel). Now he is waiting patiently, allowing God to form him into a vessel. Ellefsen is praying for wisdom and is confident and happy.

I will close for now. Warm greetings from your brother, always bound in Christ,

Johan

Sunday, March 3rd:

Today at 4 p.m. we will have a meeting at our house. If you want to keep the power, then keep yourself pure and work among your friends against that spirit that wants to be regarded as something great in this world.

The power of God expresses itself most strongly when you testify against the assembly.

When the truth comes too close for comfort, people start shouting and fumbling around for their songbook.

The sufferings of Christ make us strong, and total surrender makes us invincible; we will not be put to shame in the gate. Hallelujah!
