I have received your letters, and it has been a great joy both for me and for all of us to hear how it’s going with you all in Kristiansand. Sharing the same battle for the same cause, and also the dishonor that comes with it, strengthens unity and brotherhood. It was a joy to hear your voice on the telephone. Berglioth arrived here today at 1:00 p.m. and left for Fredrikstad at 4:30; she will come back tomorrow. She asked me to say that she will probably be home on Thursday or Friday of this week. She had a good time with her friend near Kristiania. She had to go to Fredrikstad.
We had a short meeting here on Friday evening. Two strapping sailors, both married men between 26 and 28 years old, who had given their hearts to Jesus about three weeks ago, received the Spirit of God and began to speak in tongues. One of them shook violently, but they were overflowing with joy and went home that evening arm in arm. In the Lutheran Church Association, the Spirit had come over the one who shook so violently, and he began to shake again. One man had to support his head, which he was very thankful for, because after the first time his head hurt. Amazing how God works. God is blessing us in such marvelous ways in these prayer meetings that people are asking to be allowed to attend. Almost always, something extraordinary happens. Everything is being done strictly according to the Spirit, and the power is so mightily present that I feel like something is bound to happen. The Spirit falls on the one you would least expect, and it happens so quickly that you’re absolutely amazed. On Sunday evening, Br. Ellefsen and I were in the Christi Menighed. There were quite a few people there. Sandersen spoke, and after that there was freedom to speak. God prompted me to speak in tongues and interpret, as well as to prophesy. God’s Spirit was mightily over the assembly, and they prayed, one after the other, both men and women. You could see that many of them had received the Spirit of prayer. Sandersen himself prayed far more fervently than before. They have nothing against us there.
Brother Antony (the editor) arrived from Denmark today; he stayed for about half an hour while I was at the office. Pauline spoke with him, and he wants to come back on a Sunday in the near future. He asked us to come to Larvik and take a walk in the beech tree forest this summer, etc. He was very worried that some of the things taking place were rather unwholesome and wanted to know how it was going here. Pauline explained to him that things were good here, that we had never had official meetings, but that we went around to other places, and occasionally we had house meetings. I don’t know how it is in Kristiania and Drammen, but you yourself know how it is here, that everything is done appropriately, and God’s power manifests itself in an amazing way. As far as I’m concerned, people can shout and shake until it’s seen and heard a long way off, as long as it is the work of the Spirit, which is not difficult to understand. So, I consider these manifestations to be totally in order, even if the whole world says that they are drunk with sweet wine or that they are of the devil and crazy. If a person is that inept when it concerns the Spirit’s presence, he can just leave, and then maybe later he will end up shouting and trembling together with the multitude who will cry out to the hills and mountains to cover them from the countenance of Him who sits on the throne. Klingsaid said that he would gladly sit and tremble for all eternity.
I hear that you’ve had a clash with X17. A settling of accounts like that leads to a thorough “spring cleaning” in the deepest chambers of the heart and produces a delightfully clean fragrance. Cowardice is the worst kind of leaven we can encounter. True courage brings true peace and instills respect in our opponents, so that it will be for us as it was for David: God causes all our enemies around us to be at peace with us. They leave us in peace, not because they feel sorry for us, but because they don’t want to taste the edge of the sword. A peace based on the enemy’s fear of war is delightful. Such peace surpasses all understanding. The peace which is protected by the helmet of salvation and the breastplate of righteousness—with sword in hand—is precious indeed. All other peace is not true peace, for then we fall prey to whoever wants to devour us. It’s appalling how little knowledge many who write letters to the editor of the daily newspapers actually have. My heart burns within me when I see such stupendous ignorance trying to put on a dignified face in the midst of all its folly. David says that my heart burns within me because Your enemies do not have Your Word abiding in them. When such people rise up as enemies, it’s just like a pile of paper vaunting itself against a fire.
I would really like to talk with Antony. Pauline says he is sharp, and that’s what it takes. Nothing ever comes of those who go around preaching about peace, peace, quietness, quietness, love, love. A bucket of cold water is the only thing that can wake such people up. Jesus said that He had come to cast fire on the earth. There are enough people running around with a hose trying to put it out. Let us therefore be twice as zealous to light fires all over the place, so they can stumble, be confused, and not be able to figure it out.
Hearty greetings to you and those at home.
Your brother,
JohanIt would be extremely useful if a clear explanation of the gift of tongues and its intended use could be published. I was very much in agreement with the excerpt from your letter in Gode Budskab. May God give wisdom in this matter so that some of the misunderstandings can be cleared up among those who have begun on the way. We won’t make any headway explaining such things to the world, so it’s pointless to even try.
