God’s peace in Christ Jesus.
Thanks for your good letter, which I received yesterday. I am happy to say that I found abundant fruit as a result of Br. Ellefsen’s labors here in Haugesund. For several years now, Ellefsen has visited a brother named Johan Lohne who is the foreman of a machine shop here in town. There is more depth to Br. Lohne than one might initially think. We have now been together for three evenings and have spoken about many things. He even has some understanding about the battle against the principalities of this world and the spirit that is working in the children of disobedience. He said that when Br. Ellefsen first visited him, what Ellefsen spoke about was such solid food that he had to change the subject just to make it through the conversation. But Ellefsen was dissatisfied with that, and Lohne realized that it grieved Ellefsen. The first evening we were together, Lohne immediately asked about how a person could serve the law of sin with the flesh and the law of God with their mind. But he understood it quickly when we made the connection to the deeds of the body and the works of the flesh.
Br. Lohne told me about a 21-year-old brother whom Ellefsen had also spoken with. He has a lot of light and searches out the laws of the Lord and meditates on them day and night. Yesterday evening we went to visit this brother, but unfortunately he was not at home. I hope I can meet him today or tomorrow.
It was a great joy to meet Br. Johan Olsen. We had a blessed time together. Just like Lohne, he has tasted so much of God’s good word that it is impossible for them to be satisfied with anything else. Immediately after his conversion, Lohne was told he was not allowed to give his testimony in the meeting house; the preacher said he had a different spirit.
You asked what congregation we visited in Trondheim and who the leader was. It was a free assembly, where all kinds of people were welcome. I don’t know the leader’s name, but it was not I. B. Jacobsen. And I don’t know if he was actually appointed as the leader, but Br. Olsen called him the leader. Br. Jacobsen doesn’t have any discernment. As people get older, it seems to be very difficult. He is 60, and Lohne is 31 years old.
For my birthday Aksel sent me a fountain pen. It’s very useful here in the mess hall, where I often have to sit with a pad of paper on my knee and write. I was glad to hear that Oldeide is in Moldøen. We are now sailing to Bergen and will be in dry dock for approximately 8 days and then will sail on to Moldøen. Br. Ellefsen has been in Vardø on board the Viking, together with a petty officer from Kristiansand. This man received God’s good word and has now left for home. Maybe I’ve told you about that before.
We have had the admiral on board from Trondheim to Stavanger. He has inspected all the torpedo boats along the coast. We also had Gade and Captain Johansen on board. They inspected all the guns and carried out firing practice with 37mm sub-caliber, breech-loading guns, using 76mm ammunition. Everything went very well. God is also along in the earthly things and helps us in every way. Praise His name.
I was very happy that you agreed with the steps we have taken with Br. Andresen. May we always be diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. I don’t want to do anything on my own without consulting you and Aksel, since I have confidence in you both that the will of God is your will, even if it goes contrary to both honor and personal benefit. Br. Ellefsen’s quiet labors have been a source of great joy. May there be many capable brothers, so that compared to them, we would be regarded as incapable.
Greet your mother and Judith. Greet Einar and the friends. Your work in the Lord is not in vain.
Warm greetings from your devoted brother,
Johan
