God’s peace.
Thank you for your good letter which came today. It’s so good to hear about your labor in the Lord, that He is with you and is opening doors for His word. You know that the kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which is smaller than any other seed; but when it grows, it becomes so large that the birds of the air can nest in its branches. That’s also how it’s going with us. We were alone, misunderstood by everyone; but now, praise God, the seed is growing.
Here in Ålesund I went to Kristi Menighet with Br. Devold a number of times, but I had the same experience as Paul did in the synagogues—he eventually had to leave, taking the disciples with him. In the Free Mission there are several brothers who had at one time received the Spirit of God, but they haven’t really understood that they need to receive the word in the Holy Spirit. 1 Thess. 1:6. This is a pervasive lack everywhere. I also visited the friends who speak in tongues. In both of these places they said I should definitely come again. To begin with, the word is like beautiful music to them, but once it begins to tear down and to build up, that’s when the resistance usually begins.
Br. Kvalheim from Moldøen (about 160 km to the south) is here today on a business trip, selling soft drink syrup. He told about how God has blessed him since he received the word. They break bread together, and several of them were thinking about leaving the Salvation Army. Br. Kvalheim has considerable wisdom and has asked them to stay where they are until they are sure of what they are doing. Both he and his wife want to be baptized as soon as possible. I’m enclosing a letter from Br. Birkeland and one from Br. Kvalheim.
God has spread us out along the coast in such an amazing way. May He bless our work. I rejoice over the two sisters you wrote about and also the two brothers, one of whom has traveled south. God is doing amazing things. However, the fact is that they are extremely weak to begin with, so it will likely be difficult for them to stand up against external spiritual influences.
January 1, 1915: Happy New Year. Br. Kvalheim came to town and was on board both yesterday and today. He is very special. God has given him the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. God cares for His people in an amazing way. Lord willing, we will be sailing for Haugesund on January 15, where I expect to meet Br. Lohne and Br. Risnes.
It’s been such a long time since I last spoke to you that I’m longing to speak with you face to face.
All the best, dear brother.
Warm greetings from your brother,
Johan
