Letter to Theodor Ellefsen, 1914/12/19

Collected Writings Volume 2 • 1912 - 1917
Ålesund, December 19, 1914
Dear Br. Theodor Ellefsen,
God’s peace.

Hearty thanks for your good letter and for Br. Skiaker’s letter, both of which I have forwarded today to Br. D. Kvalheim in Moldøen. He is a brother who has laid hold of the word and who rejoices in the light of God. It is the same with a brother named Nils Strand and both of their wives. However, Br. Kvalheim is the one who understands and who has received the word. The others have been blessed. Kvalheim has held Bible studies in his home and read from a thick Adventist book from America. It took several days before he completely gave up this doctrine, but finally he let it go. Now he is rejoicing in the freedom. We were together almost every evening in Moldøen, and he dug into things relentlessly and wouldn’t give up until he understood. “Please repeat that,” he kept saying, until he grasped the word. Before I left town, we broke bread together. It was the first time they had done this in their homes; but since then they have continued doing it. Kvalheim’s maid was also gripped by the message. One schoolmistress asked for power to endure the fellowship of Christ’s sufferings. Praise God, He is with us.

We have been anchored here since December 15. Starting January 15, 1915, the plan is to sail to Haugesund. I haven’t met anyone here yet. Today I received a letter from Br. Johan Olsen in Trondheim; he is doing well, but he is feeling the tribulations. The brothers are growing and progressing everywhere; praise God for that. Br. Kvalheim would often say: “Apply for leave and travel to different places, telling people about these wonderful things, because there are many who are bound.” Yes, I think many are yearning for liberation; but they are still bound.

We are planning to spend Christmas Eve on shore. Everyone has contributed something to make it a special time. When I was in Horten, Br. Karl and I visited Grøtaas, and we said that none of us should feel obligated with regard to purchasing the lodge, since these are difficult times. He agreed with this.

Br. Aslaksen was on board the Kong Sverre until December 15. Now he is second in command of the Æger at Putten Island near Fredrikstad. He plans to visit Sarpsborg. It’s remarkable how God has spread us around these days—along the entire coast from the North Cape to the Swedish border. In Bergen I met Br. Moe and his wife who are from Hønefoss; you wouldn’t believe the progress he has made. Br. Skiaker writes blessed things. I wrote two letters to him, and he responded. I wrote to Br. Lohne and also received a letter from him. The work is becoming more and more extensive. The Spirit of God was powerfully active in Moldøen. There were packed meetings at Br. Kvalheim’s house, and several people began to get glimpses of light. But none to the same extent as Kvalheim. He reminds me of Karl or Skiaker. Br. Risnes in Haugesund is a similar type of person. These people have deep, searching spirits that do not give up until they find answers. I am glad that you have someone on board to speak with and that you have met some people on shore as well. God has blessed your work, and He will continue to do so. The fruits will endure. We just need to spread the light.

All the best. Have a blessed Christmas holiday.

Warm greetings.

Your devoted brother,

Johan
