Collected Writings Volume 2 • 1912 - 1917
Valkyrjen, Odda in Hardanger, April 24, 1915
Dear Br. D. Kvalheim,
God’s perfect peace.

Br. Theodor Ellefsen is serving as a gunner on board the gunboat Viking, based in Haugesund. As you know, he spent time in Finnmark when they sailed there this past winter. He sent me a few letters from a Sr. Dannell, who is working up there, as well as a letter from Br. Nils Risnes. These letters will be a blessing wherever they are read, so I am sending them to you, so that you, your wife, and Sr. Kjærstad can read them. After you have read them, please send them to Sr. Gunda Willersrud (Address: Ystenæs, Good Templars Lodge in Brodersund, Ålesund) with the request that within about 8 days they be returned to: Gunner Th. Ellefsen, Viking, Haugesund. Br. Nils Risnes is a dear brother, who perhaps communicates better verbally than in writing. It would be good if Sr. G. Willersrud could read these letters to those friends in Ålesund who love the truth which accords with godliness. Please include this letter when you send them.

I attended a Salvation Army soldiers’ meeting here. Amazingly enough, the female officers spoke about being baptized with the Holy Spirit. I then spoke about the necessity of receiving that Spirit which has the power to lead us onward in the truth, the Spirit that was intended to take of what is Jesus’ and declare it to us. They listened attentively, and they prayed for “the visiting seaman,” as they called me; but when I prayed that the Spirit of God would fall there and then, I felt resistance from every side. So they want to have the Spirit of God, but on their own terms and for their own glory. But God does not give His Holy Spirit for the glorification of flesh. It is strange that it is so difficult to understand that God requires full submission and obedience before He gives His good Spirit to lead us further.

Write some words to those who are in Ålesund; it is blessed to get to know one another according to the Spirit, so that we can be strengthened in the Spirit for fellowship in the same body—because as you know, we have been baptized with one Spirit to be one body, and our growth is the growth of the body.

Br. Ellefsen asked me to send Sr. Dannell’s letters to Br. Risnes. So I am sending him her most recent letters; but I think it will be more beneficial if I send the others to you.

Greet the dear friends in Moldøen. May God abundantly bless you with love—with the insight of wisdom to share every good thing with one another in that body where all the fullness of God dwells.

Warm greetings from your brother,

J. O. Smith
