Letter to Aksel Smith, 1915/12/18

Collected Writings Volume 2 • 1912 - 1917
Valkyrjen, Haugsholmen, December 18, 1915
Dear brother Aksel,

I am sending an article to Skjulte Skatter. We are now anchored way out at the mouth of the fjord and are rolling from side to side, so much so that sometimes the cabinet doors fly open. We don’t have shore leave, but there isn’t any place to go ashore here anyway. However, we do receive mail four times a week. I haven’t seen a newspaper since coming here, so we know little about what is happening in the war.

I’m now reading the English translation of Madame Guyon; I’m almost finished with Part 1. I’m plugging away at it as best I can. I would wholeheartedly encourage Helga to read the English translation of this book. Madame Guyon shows how a woman can achieve great things in the spiritual realm.

We will stay here through the Christmas holidays—until January 5. I recently received two letters from Ålesund. The latest one was dated December 11, but Hansen had not arrived there at that point. They are expecting him. There have been some conflicts within the group, because some of those on the periphery are in opposition. However, Gunda Willersrud has ironed things out, and now everything is in order again. The source of all this is a woman by the name of Kristiansen who has spoken evil of this doctrine.

I assume you’ve heard from Hansen. I have only received one card from him, which came from Moldøen. It is high time for Ålesund to receive spiritual assistance. We’ll get there about three or four days after Christmas to replenish our supply of coal and water. I might be able to come ashore on one of those evenings. Otherwise, we are doing well. Greet the friends and your family.

Have a blessed Christmas and New Year.

Warm greetings from your brother,

Johan
