Truth Springs Out of the Earth
Pilate once asked, “What is truth?” But Jesus did not answer him, and for good reason. Pilate assumed—as some people believe—that truth would spring out of the religious high places, in places that are the most highly esteemed. However, this is not the case.
“Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.” Ps. 85:11.
Truth springs out of the lowly places, out of what is poor and oppressed. The great men of this world do not recognize this, but there is One above who is righteous, who looks down from heaven to uphold the truth.
The eyes of the preachers of our time are far too proud to be able to look down into the lowly places and notice the truth that springs out of the earth. The eyes of the righteous look to the lowly places, and that is why they understand the plight of those who are lowly. Those who are puffed up—who want to be somebody—look up to worldly and religious prestige.
God is righteous. He looks down from heaven to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are loyal to Him.
John had no greater joy than that his children walked in truth. 3 John 4. In other words, they walked in lowliness, where God allows something to spring out of the earth.
There is a covering over everything glorious, and there is also a covering over the truth. Since the Spirit is to guide us into all truth, His work is to lead us, through reproof, down to the lowly places where truth springs forth. Those who are of a contrite heart and a broken spirit readily find this place, but those who are puffed up never find it.
“And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.” 2 Kings 19:30.
The deeper down a person takes root, the higher they bear fruit. A wise person digs deep and lays their foundation on the rock. Having laid their foundation on that solid rock, they can then build higher than someone who lays their foundation on the sand.
You who are newly converted, do not concern yourself with trying to move upward. Rather be diligent to dig deep; then God will lift you up in His time.
In our time, we see many preachers reaching for the heights. But, one after the other, they fall from these heights, because they did not dig deep from the beginning.
Paul cast down arguments and every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God. He could do that because he had deep roots downward.
