Collected Writings Volume 2 • 1912 - 1917
Horten, June 9, 1912
Dear Br. Elias Aslaksen,
God’s grace and peace in Christ Jesus.

Thank you for your good letter which I received. There is an umbrella here in our living room which I assume is yours. It is probably best to send it to your parents in Kristiania.

Your wedding day is quickly approaching, which for a bride of Christ ought to be a day like any other. Rest in God will guide everything in that direction, because all unnecessary fuss is of and from the flesh.

Dear brother, I would like to speak openly with regard to the friends in Horten. As you know, out of love for you we have collected money for you for over a year now, so that we can further the work for God’s kingdom in that way. It would have been very good if we could have continued to help you, especially when you are traveling; however, the financial situation here is so bad that we have nothing we can use to help our local friends, and that has proven to be detrimental on several occasions. In a particularly difficult predicament, one individual was burdened beyond what he was able to bear. For that reason, we decided to withdraw everything from the bank and everything from our cash box and give that to you—as a wedding present from the friends in Horten. But from now on, we need to try to take care of our internal matters, so we will not be able to offer everything we have. Nevertheless, you are the servant working in the Lord’s vineyard who is closest to our heart. Therefore, if the collection box can cover our expenses, if the Lord blesses, and you come here to Horten now and then, we will try to support you.

We must do things this way because there have been several occasions where we have encountered some conflicts because of financial difficulties. And the church must not be the reason an individual gets into debt. This has to do with purity.

Therefore, I have confidence in you dear brother, as someone who loves the truth above all else, that you do understand and that you have already partly understood these circumstances. When it concerns raffles and that sort of thing, we have stopped having them here because it has not been as pure as it ought to be. Better to have less with purity.

Be free from everything and everyone because the Lord will take care of you. I say this with regard to the circumstances in Hønefoss. Retain the authority you have received from God, and don’t allow any gift giver to rob you of your rightful authority to rebuke when chastening is necessary. You are now in situations where God requires extreme faithfulness; you must not show partiality to anyone or allow yourself to be corrupted by gifts. I write these things not because you do not know them, but to remind you of them so that God can accomplish yet much more by your hand.

Loving greetings from your brother who is always devoted in Jesus Christ,

Johan

Regarding the conference, I assume it will fit.
