“‘Peace, peace to him…
“‘Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,’ says the Lord . . . . But the wicked are like the trouble sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. ‘“There is no peace,’ says My God, ‘for the wicked.’” Isa. 57:19-21.
This is one of the most significant verses in the whole Bible! This is the state of the ungodly. But what is even worse, this is also the state of the vast majority—almost all—members in the various church denominations who profess to believe in Jesus Christ! In this matter, the Word, as we read in Hebrews 4, has not profited them (for example, Romans 6:6 and Galatians 2:20 and many, many others). If only they had believed these verses, the truth written there would have led them into a life of constant rest in God, with peace in their hearts in the midst of this world’s unrest and trouble.
They cannot be at rest! How true that is. Why? Because of all the sin and ungodliness within them. It ferments there like a witch’s brew! What hinders them? It would be better to ask what does not hinder them. Because of their own ungodliness, they say that everything and everyone hinders them. But the fact is, there is only one hindrance to a person’s happiness and rest, and that is the person himself! It is the old man who cannot be quiet, who cannot keep the peace, who cannot be submissive, and who is not and never can be completely satisfied.
The glorious escape from all this misery and trouble is the cross of Christ—the death of Christ!!! Not only that He was crucified and died for my sins, but that I (my old man) was crucified with Him!
What a glorious entrance into continuous, unchanging rest!!!
