..nothing causes them to stumble..

“Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble [be offended].” Ps. 119:165.

Just think, nothing can offend such people! There is nothing and no one that can cause them offense. But the ungodly, who love themselves instead of loving the laws of the Spirit of life (as Paul expresses it in Romans 8), are constantly offended. They are offended at everything and everyone who crosses their carnal will and taste; and there is never any noticeable lack of offensive things and people in this evil and imperfect world. Neither is it God’s intention that there should be any lack of them, because they are there for our training, to test us. Then at the revelation of Jesus Christ, there will be rejoicing by the hosts of heaven over our tested faith, as Peter writes.

For example, when an ungodly person is treated unjustly, it is obvious that he will get offended. He feels in his heart, “This is terrible! Totally uncalled for! He, he, he . . . .” The ungodly person loves the money and the honor out of which he was cheated.

On the other hand, a godly person is not bothered by these earthly trifles; he loves the Word of Christ, the laws of the Spirit of life, and God’s will instead. And what does the Word of God say regarding this—the Word with which the godly melt together by faith and which they love and obey with all their hearts? “Why not rather be defrauded?” and “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps . . . .”

This is precisely what it means to love His laws, to keep them, to obey the Word, and it is this very thing that produces rest, peace, and joy in our hearts and minds. This is the very opposite of being offended. Praise be to God!
