At Midnight a Woman Was Lying at His Feet

Verse 8

By obedience and faith we are led by the Spirit and our conscience to purify and cleanse ourselves, to the extent that God’s darkness seems to smother us. It becomes midnight in the soul, and we can go no further. By faith we are driven to Him who has helped us and who can still help us. We lift the cover and lie down, trembling and fearful, at His feet. The Lord has said that He will dwell in a cloud, and now He has lied down at the end of the heap of grain. Blessed is each soul that takes note of where He has lied down, so he can find his way in the deepest darkness—in blind faith.

Now the shepherd and overseer of her soul woke up in all seriousness. He bowed down, and behold: a wretched woman, poor in spirit, lying at His feet. This was an envious state to be in, even for a Mary who sat by Jesus’ feet in bright daylight.
