May Your House Be Like the House of Perez, Whom Tamar Bore to Judah, Because of the Offspring Which the Lord Will Give You From This Young Woman
The fact that the elders and all the people wished that Boaz’s house would be like Perez’s house indicates that Perez’s house must have been a great blessing in Israel. If we look at the genealogy, we find that Boaz was descended from Perez. Vs. 18-22. This was a blessed family.
Perez was the son of Judah by his daughter-in-law Tamar. When Tamar was about to give birth, there were twins in her womb. And when she was giving birth, the one stuck out his hand. Then the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.”
But it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out, and she said, “How did you break through?” And they called his name Perez, which is, breach. Afterwards his brother came out, the one who had the scarlet band around his hand, and they called his name Zerah, which is, dawn. Gen. 38.
There was something special about Perez’s birth. He broke through ahead of his brother. Presumably Perez was a man who later on in life broke through in the Spirit’s world and became a great blessing for those who followed him. Now and then the world needs a pioneer. God often sent such men to Israel. They cast light into obscure and dark situations. They chastised and were hated, but God was with them.
We too could use someone like Perez in our days, someone who could make a way through all this false liberty, through all this idle talk about the cross and about power—but with neither the cross nor the power. May God raise up many such people in these days when people have the appearance of godliness, but deny its power.
