“The Flesh Is Weak”
“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matt. 26:41.
Why did Jesus not say: “But your flesh is weak”? Because then He would have declared that it was not so with His flesh. And why did He watch and fight and pray so vehemently, so persistently? Because He had taken upon Himself the same flesh, the same self-will. He “Himself likewise partook of the same.” Otherwise He could have taken it easy and slept soundly, as the others did, brushing the whole thing off as though it were nothing at all. But He has clearly demonstrated to us that He Himself needed to watch and pray! Indeed, He went three times and prayed the same words, thus gaining the victory.
A person would need to do some real mental gymnastics to get around this; in which case God has not opened his eyes to the great work Christ accomplished in the days of His flesh.
