A Man
Some time ago an article appeared in the Christmas issue of a well-known Christian publication, asserting that the Scriptures, although calling Jesus “Man,” nowhere refer to Him as “a man.” This, in the opinion of both the writer and the paper, was supposed to prove that Christ did not “likewise” partake of a flesh; or, in other words, that Hebrews 2:14, along with many other scriptures, is misleading.
However, we must search the Scriptures, just as the book of Acts tells us the brethren in Berea did. Here we have an outstanding example of how most Christian publications cannot be relied upon. The Scriptures do use the expression “a Man” about the Son of God in the days of His flesh. Indeed, Jesus Himself says: “But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God.” John 8:40. The apostle John, who in his epistles strongly emphasizes Christ manifested in the flesh, also uses the same expression, calling Him “a Man.”
“But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.” John 2:24-25. It is crystal clear that He knew from His own experience what dwelt in man, and not by virtue of God who sees and knows all things. This is in full harmony with Hebrews 4:15. So both the writer and the paper proved the exact opposite of what they set out to prove.
