He Is Our Peace
Everyone wants peace. Even those who fight do so in order to get peace. The world yearns for peace but does not seek it in accordance with a good conscience; rather, it seeks and finds peace by deadening the conscience. It is written, “The desire of the flesh is death.” [Rom. 8:6, Norw.]. In other words, peace in death. Christ gives us a peace—He gives us His peace—He does not give it to us as the world gives. We keep the peace of Christ by wanting the same things that God wants and by carrying out what He works in us to do.
It takes a conscious act from our side to enter into God’s will. We must pull ourselves together, as the saying goes, and overcome the desire of the flesh by consciously allowing God to work in us both to will and to do. By doing so, God does not take away our free will. Rather, He strengthens it, so that we are able to conquer those things in our flesh that otherwise would bring us under the law of sin and death. In other words, the peace of death.
The peace of death is not eternal. Although a person’s conscience can be deadened, and they die in their sins and transgressions, they are actually only treasuring up wrath for themselves in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.
People who have come to Christ often make the great mistake of seeking a deeper peace by searching in books and literature. The peace of Christ is not found there. He is our peace. “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.”
Life and peace are in Him, and He is manifested in us when our will is united with His. He begins by convincing us of the advantages of wanting the same thing that He wants and of the loss that comes from wanting to obey the desires of the flesh. A person doesn’t have any other choice—unless that person surrenders themself totally into the service of Satan and evil spirits.
By using their ability to reason, people have received power by the Spirit to assert their individuality and raise themselves up from sin and death into righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Their very being is transformed from a lower level of existence to a higher level. These laws are universal, and they can be freely utilized by any person. The blood of Christ destroys sin in the flesh.
He is our peace. This “He” refers to a person—a life. This life, and thereby this peace, are to be manifested in our mortal flesh. He came to do the will of God. Whenever He comes into a body, He will follow the same law: that is, to do the will of God. Everyone who does God’s will has peace with God; and this peace is called the peace of Christ, because only through Him are we able to do God’s will.
Some people will say, “What is the will of God?” The answer is: whatever needs to be done right in front of you. It is God’s will that you get rid of all unrighteousness, humble yourself, forgive, and ask for forgiveness. It’s only when these basic principles of the will of God are fulfilled exactly that it is possible for you to understand more of God’s will. Until these are fulfilled, you won’t have access to God.
Unrighteousness of any kind hinders peace from working. Get rid of unrighteousness, and peace will come of itself. To be spiritually minded is life and peace, and the Scriptures testify about His (Christ’s) life.
