Letter to Elias Aslaksen, 1912/08/08

Collected Writings Volume 2 • 1912 - 1917
Horten, August 8, 1912
Dear Br. Aslaksen,

I am enclosing some letters which I know you will find interesting. You see that the friends in Sarpsborg are in a good development. I have enclosed a letter from Aksel, which I first sent to Sarpsborg, and now that I’ve gotten it back, I’m sending it to you. Such letters are strengthening, so I think it will be a blessing if they can be circulated. Please send the letter from Johanson to Aksel as soon as possible; you can keep the rest.

As you may know, Br. Mikkelsen has gotten a position on a Coast Guard cutter. He is here every two weeks or so. Last night he was here again, and we had a good conversation down at Br. Birkeland’s place. He mentioned that he has two nights off in Larkollen, where there are several brothers, and he is thinking of using those evenings to have a Bible study. We were glad to hear about it and encouraged him to do that.

I don’t know what will happen to me. All my heart is in this work, but I’m stuck here. God will show the way out, and I am grateful that He will guide all things in the future, just as He has done so far.

As you can see, churches are beginning to grow up in various places, and we have a responsibility for them. I am glad, dear brother, that God has brought you into the work. God will continue to bless your ministry as He has blessed it to this day. He will reward you richly because you have chosen to serve Him, which is why you renounced a position that is highly esteemed by people. From what I gather from Br. Hansen’s letters, there have been several “rumblings” in Kristiania since Aksel left. Hansen is young, but he’s a fine, young lad. It is not easy for the younger ones to hear the difference when other people come in with their own take on things. There was somebody called Nestavold, or Nestvedt, who had managed to get almost everyone on his side, but Hansen objected when he did not find that the voice was as pure as he had hoped.

In Sarpsborg, Pettersen was the main figure at the local meeting place there; but as you can see from Johanson’s letter, he has now renounced this position in order to be more free. So you can see that it is going in the right direction.

Greet Judith and the friends.

Your brother, sharing in the battle and in the glory,

Johan

I don’t know where Aksel is now, but you can write to Kristiansand. Attn: Arsenal Paymaster Christian Smith.

Ellefsen and Tobiassen are doing a good job selling Prayer over there on the West Coast.
